School Curriculum and Features
Chung Dau Bilingual Elementary School in Zhuangwei Township, Yilan County is located in the beautiful Lanyang Plain. The school is located in the middle of the rice fields. The children in Chung Dau can enjoy the fresh air, walk in the pure countryside, look at the Mount Dasyue and watch the stars at night, and cultivate the positive energy of encouragement and enthusiasm.
Dr. Chen Huang , the founder of Chung Dau Bilingual Elementary School, has set “Quality, Style, Innovation, and Excellence” as the core values for the founding of the school. The vision of Chung Dao is “Bilingualism is good, and Chung Dau is the world”. It is the goal of the school to cultivate the elite of future leaders, to enhance the bilingual ability of students, and to give them the confidence to go to the international stage. “Two Arts, Two Sports, One Classics, Whole English, and International Education” is the school-based curriculum, which is in line with the unlimited learning possibilities of bilingual education. Therefore, the school emphasizes basic knowledge, humanistic connotation, international literacy, and care for the place where they grow up. In the curriculum planning, special emphasis is placed on quality teaching of English, classical Chinese literature and reading, scientific exploration and research, art enrichment, life education and counseling care.
As a result of the COVID-19 epidemic, schools all over the world have switched from traditional teaching to online teaching, and even mixed online teaching has become the normal practice. 2019’s sudden epidemic has caused our teachers to start thinking about how to break through the crisis and learn how to use digital technology to connect teachers and students to learn together, forming a chance to turn around and see the hope of life in the turnaround.
In 2022, we have applied for the Ministry of Education’s Digital Learning Deepening Program. Teachers planned problem-oriented learning and integrated teaching with design thinking, so that students can strengthen their hands-on skills through “doing, using, and thinking” to solve problems in life. Based on digital technology, we promote students’ collaboration and creativity, and we have also formed international partner schools for online learning exchange, and formed school-based curriculum innovation.
Features of School-based Curriculum and Instructional Consultation
l Moral Education
The school has established five core values of character: “honesty, respect, caring, law-abiding, and politeness” and seven good habits for leaders: “taking initiative, clear goals, prioritizing, win-win thinking, knowing one’s enemy and self, innovation, and continuous improvement”. Through the teachers’ example, value clarification, theoretical discussion, behavior regulation and guidance, service learning, and self-motivation, the students will develop the correct cognitive, affective, and behavioral approaches.
l Chinese Classics Program
The Chinese curriculum not only follows the Ministry of Education’s 12-year Basic Education curriculum to develop basic Chinese language skills, but also has 240 classical Chinese poems and classics selected by Dr. Bang Jen Chen, the chairman of the board, for grade-specific study.
l ESL Programs
The school has implemented ESL and CLIL teaching modes since its inception, using American textbooks and teachers’ own textbooks to meet the needs of local students who are familiar with second language learning and to meet the bridging learning experience of overseas students.
In the 110-111 school year, we received a grant from the Ministry of Education for the Bilingual Education in International Education Program, and in addition to the original 15 classes of ESL, we also developed our own CLIL bilingual curriculum, which is implemented in the second year of life. In addition to the original 15 sections of ESL, we have developed our own CLIL model of bilingual education, which is implemented in the second year of the program.
In order to assist students from disadvantaged backgrounds, we have applied for the Ministry of Education’s Bilingual Digital Learning Companion Program since the 111th school year, which allows students to strengthen their English skills through online learning by university students with expertise in English after school. At Chung Dau, we are committed to improving our students’ English skills by supporting the underprivileged.
l International Education and Digital Learning Programs
In addition to strengthening bilingual expression skills, the bilingual education program is in line with the Ministry of Education’s vision of “connecting to the world, linking to the world”, and is designed to cultivate an international outlook, to understand the world, and to see the world from Taiwan. The international education curriculum includes topics such as international etiquette, international culture, international pen pals, international issues, and international exchange. Since the 110th school year, we have applied for the Ministry of Education’s International Education into Bilingual Curriculum Program and developed our own bilingual life curriculum using the CLIL teaching model. In the Digital Learning Development Program, we have participated in the development and implementation of the international curriculum. We have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Kagaya City School Board in Japan to conduct international exchanges and co-learning programs in digital technology. We have already conducted co-learning and cultural exchanges with schools in Japan and Singapore through online e-learning programs in 2022. After a year of hard work, we were awarded the Silver Award for the promotion of the 2022 e-Learning program in primary and secondary schools, and became the implementing school for the 112th e-Learning program. We hope that our students will be able to use their English well, but we also want them to be able to use it. Therefore, we applied to the Ministry of Education’s School Internationalization Program to build a bilingual international learning environment and use educational technology to give our students a competitive advantage.
l Two Arts Curriculum and Activities
In order to cultivate students’ cultural connotation between Chinese and foreign cultures, the school-based curriculum also includes: calligraphy, musical instrument learning, and golf; one course per week for grades 1-6. At the end of each day, we also provide after-school talent learning, such as violin, individual piano instruction, inline skating, table tennis, soccer, badminton, dance, science creation, GO, programming language, and homework guidance, etc., in order to explore students’ multiple potentials.
l A comprehensive tutor and support system
In order to take care of the students’ learning and growth, we adopt a small class teaching system with less than 32 students in each class, and adopt a dual tutor system. The Chinese class instructors are the main instructors; the English group classes are led by foreign teachers and supplemented by native English teachers. Each student is assigned an approved teacher at the time of admission until graduation to take care of the student’s learning and adaptation to life, and a class contact network is set up for each English and Chinese class, so that teachers can contact parents in a proper manner and let the students grow up happily with love and care.
l Residential life with guidance for both living and schoolwork
In order to serve parents in Northern Taiwan who are unable to take care of their children at all times due to work, we provide dormitories for students who come from far away. The residential students are provided with daily evening tutorials (8-12 students per teacher depending on their grade level), and tutors are also assigned to provide guidance on self-care and care for their children in order to develop their independence.
l Professional Teaching Team
Our administrative team is comprised of a team of experienced teachers with academic and administrative qualifications from both Taipei cities. Dr. Li-Feng Kao, the current Vice President, has 35 years of service in the education field in Taipei City and has extensive theoretical and practical experience in curriculum planning, bilingual education and international education. The English teaching team is composed of local English teachers certified by the Ministry of Education and quality experienced foreign teachers.
l Career Guidance
After six years of solid subject matter skills in elementary school, students can be promoted to our bilingual middle school, or to other public or private high schools, or even to study abroad.
The Chung-Dau team brightens a light on children’s learning, develops the innovative value of educational change through the Creative Thinking flipped teaching model, and creates a quality learning environment with the intention of stimulating children’s strengths and potential through bilingual innovation and international culture programs, so that they can be internationally competitive in the future.
